What to Remember as You Reopen Your Pool This Summer

Spring is almost here, and after the passing of another year, it’s easy to forget the steps involved in re-opening your pool, so it’s always worthwhile to review the process. Courtesy of Carlton Pools, your source for swimming pool renovations in Lehigh County, check out these steps to refresh your memory.

Brush Off Your Pool Cover

Before you remove your swimming pool cover, you’ll want to wash off all of the dirt, dust, and debris that’s built up on the surface during the fall and winter.

Roll Up The Pool Cover

Now that your pool cover is free from seasonal dust, you’ll need at least two people to help you with holding each corner as you slowly remove it from your pool. The more help you have available at this point, the faster you can relocate the cover, hose it down, and roll it up. A clean pool cover, kept in a cool, dry place such as a shed or basement, will last a lot longer than one that’s left outside during the year.

Check Out the Water Levels

With your pool cover tucked away until the end of the summer season, now you can look at how much water your swimming pool lost during the fall and winter. If you suspect that the water levels have dropped a significant amount, you can always call on our experts at Carlton Pools to give you a hand in figuring out the issue.

To replace any lost water, you can use an everyday garden hose. Just to be safe and make sure that somebody is monitoring your pool as you’re refilling it.

Reconnect and Reactivate the System

Before you go diving back into your pool, don’t forget to reconnect your pump, filter, and heater. Remove any plugs found on your skimmers, meanwhile circling your pool and reinstalling the normal drain plugs.

Inspect Your Pool’s Chemistry

Your next, and most critical, step, will be to find and use your trusty pool chemistry kit. If you own one already, your kit ought to include strips for testing pH, total alkalinity, and chlorine in your pool’s water.

Adjust for pH and Alkalinity

To ensure that your pool water will be enjoyable and safe for everyone, it’s your job to adjust your pool’s total alkalinity appropriately. If the total alkalinity is too high, purchase or find Dry Acid or Sodium Bisulfate. On the flip side, if the total alkalinity is too low, you’ll need some sodium bicarbonate. Once you have restored an acceptable total alkalinity to your home’s pool, you can balance out your pH with Dry Acid or Soda Ash to lower or raise it, respectively.
