Water Safety: How to Protect Children In and Around Pools

Having a pool at your home or in your community can be an awesome escape on a hot summer’s day. However, children can easily become hurt or even drown without proper precautions for water safety. In fact, drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children between the ages of one and four. At Carlton Pools, we enjoy building a great backyard pool experience for our clients, and would like to provide some tips to promote the safety of your family and guests.

When the Pool is In Use

When you have people over, be sure to follow a few safety rules.

Have Water Watchers

Assign an adult to be a “water watcher.” This is someone whose responsibility is to keep eyes on everyone at all times. This includes those in the pool, as well as curious children who may be at the water’s edge. Making sure that someone is always on alert can prevent accidents.

Put Down the Phone

Although it’s tempting to take pictures poolside, or share videos on social media, it’s important to make sure that you’re present when the pool is in use, and that the phone is charged in case you have to call for an emergency.

Flotation Devices Aren’t Infallible

While water wings and inflatable floats and innertubes are good ways to help children become accustomed to the water, they aren’t a substitute for swimming skills and water safety. Even when children use floaties, they still need supervision.

When the Pool Isn’t in Use

It’s important to keep people out of the pool when not in use.

Get Serious About Fences

Secure fences, those that aren’t easily opened by children, are critical to keeping curious or adventuresome tots out of the pool area. Plus, it can protect your pool from damage.

Make the Pool Less Inviting

Cover the pool when not in use, and remove the pool toys and floats from the area. This reduces the chance of bacteria growth and makes the pool look less tempting for children.
